Hi everyone!
My name is Kristine Watts, and I am excited to be back at Black Creek Community Farm as a Market Garden Facilitator. My journey started right here at BCCF, 10 years ago, as an Agricultural Outreach Educator. Joining the BCCF team again is an opportunity I am very thankful to have.
As an Afro-Indigenous farmer, whose roots are Cherokee and Black Foot, I grew up with a strong Jamaican lineage and Southern American background. My family roots anchor the red clay soil of Jamaica and the Carolinas with earth so rich, you see it in the people. I come from a family of cooks, farmers, artists, and musicians on both my maternal and paternal sides. Growing our own food has not only been out of necessity but also for sustainability, and it is the drive that keeps me fighting for a food secure future.
My journey with farming has been synergistic and harmonious, having worked on several urban farms in the city of Toronto, before having the opportunity to acquire land myself, I started a social enterprise to increase access and awareness to holistic remedies through growing organic, non-GMO vegetables and herbs, specifically centred around Women’s Reproductive Health. I teach individuals how to grow, with my ultimate goal to ensure that people have enough knowledge and education to become self-sustainable and food sovereign.
My role at BCCF encompasses work with the land and people. Being a Market Garden Facilitator means I get to equally divide my love of working in Agriculture and also create an excellent customer experience. I look forward to learning more about operations and expanding my knowledge in soil health. When I am not on the farm, I enjoy knitting, filming farm content, writing poetry, reading, and trying new recipes in the kitchen.
