A year of challenge, learning and abundance in the Market Garden

Two new staff joined the year-round team: Rachael and Hermmela. We had an amazing crew of seasonal staff as well – Ellie, Atisa, Neil, as well as other seasonal staff who were working with the Market Garden team part-time: Maïmouna, Niya, Kioni, Krisha, Khalid, Lisa, and placement students Theodora, James, Eirene, Christine. The year was marked with lots of challenge and learning for new staff, but we were welcomed abundantly by the great community of staff and volunteers at the farm.

Some big moments in our year include:

  • Seedling work – our greenhouse was packed with trays and trays of plants for our own fields and for sale.
  • Spring bed preparation and planting of everything from gai lan to beets to Ghanian garden egg eggplant
  • Pop-Up Markets at Jane & Finch, alongside a wide variety of Black food/drink vendors
  • Thursday Farm Stands from June-November – thanks to everyone who came out and purchased fresh organic produce from us!
  • Our largest Harvest Share membership yet! This year we offered the equivalent of 94 bags of produce per week to a dedicated group of veggie-eaters from both the immediate community and beyond! Thank you for dedicating your appetites and cooking creativity to eating hyper-local, supporting community initiatives, and in season.
  • Approximately 34 100 lb of food harvested from our fields!

And the work continues through the winter! We’ll be harvesting greens from our greenhouses and selling storage vegetables through our online store in the new year. Stay glued to our website and social media for updates!
